Why Does My Air Conditioner Keep Turning On and Off?

An AC that turns on and off every few minutes — a problem called short cycling — is more than an annoyance. It can increase energy bills, reduce comfort, and shorten the life of your equipment. Here's what causes it.

A properly functioning air conditioner typically runs in cycles of 10 to 20 minutes, cooling the home to the set temperature, then shutting off and restarting as needed. If yours is turning on and off every two to five minutes — never completing a full cooling cycle — it is short cycling. This is not a quirk to live with. Short cycling is hard on equipment, hard on comfort, and worth diagnosing promptly.

What Short Cycling Actually Does to Your System

The compressor — the heart of your air conditioner — works hardest during startup. Every time the system cycles on, the compressor draws a large surge of electrical current and experiences significant mechanical stress. A system that starts and stops dozens of times per hour accumulates that startup stress at a rate the equipment was never designed to handle. Short cycling also prevents the system from running long enough to adequately remove humidity from the air, leaving homes feeling clammy even when the temperature reads correctly.

Common Causes of Short Cycling

Dirty or Clogged Air Filter

A heavily restricted filter reduces airflow to the point that the evaporator coil freezes. When the coil ices over, a safety control in some systems shuts the compressor down to prevent damage. The ice partially melts, the compressor restarts, the coil refreezes — and the cycle repeats. Check and replace the filter first. It's the most common cause and the easiest fix.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

Even after replacing the filter, if the underlying cause isn't resolved, the coil may refreeze. Other causes of a frozen coil include low refrigerant charge, a dirty coil itself, or a blower motor that is not moving adequate air. If the filter is clean and ice keeps forming, a technician should evaluate the system.

Oversized Equipment

This is one of the most important — and least discussed — causes of short cycling. An air conditioner that is too large for the home cools the space so quickly that it satisfies the thermostat within a few minutes, shuts off, and then restarts when the temperature drifts back up. The system never runs long enough to remove humidity, and the repeated start-stop cycles wear on the compressor over time.

Oversizing is surprisingly common when systems are replaced by contractors who match tonnage to the old equipment without performing a proper load calculation. If your system was recently replaced and started short cycling immediately, oversizing is the first thing to rule out.

Thermostat Problems

A thermostat installed in a poor location — near a supply vent, in direct sunlight, or on an exterior wall — can read the temperature inaccurately and cause the system to short cycle. A failing thermostat sensor can have the same effect. If the thermostat location seems problematic, or if the readings seem inconsistent with what you feel in the house, discuss it with your technician.

Electrical Issues

Failing electrical components — particularly capacitors and contactors — can cause the compressor or condenser fan to cut out mid-cycle. This may present as short cycling if the component intermittently fails under load. Capacitor failure is one of the more common electrical issues in residential HVAC, particularly in systems that have seen several summers of operation.

Refrigerant Problems

Both low refrigerant charge and, in some cases, an overcharged system can cause erratic operation including short cycling. Low refrigerant causes the evaporator coil to get too cold and freeze; some systems have a low-pressure safety switch that shuts down the compressor to prevent damage. This is a technician-level repair that requires proper diagnostic equipment.

What You Can Do Right Now

Start by checking and replacing the air filter. Confirm the thermostat is functioning correctly and is not in direct sunlight. Check that all supply and return vents are open and unobstructed. If short cycling persists after those checks, contact an HVAC technician — continued short cycling is damaging to the compressor and becomes more expensive the longer it is allowed to continue.
