Replacing your air filter is one of the simplest things you can do to protect your HVAC system. Here is what actually happens when a filter goes too long without being changed.
Of all the maintenance tasks associated with a home HVAC system, changing the air filter is the simplest β and one of the most frequently neglected. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of reduced system performance, higher energy bills, and premature equipment failures that our technicians encounter when responding to service calls in Nashville and surrounding areas.
What the Air Filter Actually Does
The air filter in your HVAC system is positioned to capture particles from the return air before they reach the blower, evaporator coil, and other internal components. Its primary purpose is to protect the equipment, with improved air quality as a secondary benefit. A clean filter allows adequate airflow while trapping dust, debris, and particles that would otherwise accumulate on components.
What Happens When the Filter Gets Clogged
Reduced Airflow
As a filter accumulates debris, it restricts the amount of air that can pass through it. The blower motor has to work harder to pull the same volume of air, which increases energy consumption and generates more heat in the motor itself.
Frozen Evaporator Coil
Reduced airflow across the evaporator coil can cause the coil temperature to drop below freezing, resulting in ice formation on the coil. A frozen coil cannot absorb heat from the air effectively, which means the system produces little or no cooling even while running continuously. If you find your air conditioner running but not cooling, a clogged filter is one of the first things to check.
Overheating
In heating systems, restricted airflow can cause the heat exchanger in a gas furnace to overheat, which triggers safety controls and shuts the system down. Repeated overheating accelerates wear on the heat exchanger β a component that is expensive to replace.
Higher Energy Bills
A system working against a clogged filter uses more electricity to produce the same result. This shows up as higher utility bills without any change in usage habits or outdoor temperatures.
Shortened Equipment Life
The additional stress placed on the blower motor, compressor, and other components by restricted airflow accelerates wear and can shorten the useful life of otherwise well-maintained equipment.
How Often to Change Your Filter
Most standard 1-inch filters should be replaced every 30 to 90 days. Thicker media filters (4 to 5 inches) typically last 6 to 12 months. Factors that increase replacement frequency include pets, multiple occupants, high dust conditions, or residents with allergies or respiratory concerns. Check your filter monthly β when it appears visibly dirty, replace it regardless of how long it has been in use.
Choosing the Right Filter
Filters are rated on the MERV scale (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value). Higher MERV filters trap smaller particles but also restrict more airflow. Most residential systems perform best with a MERV 8 to 11 filter β high enough to capture common allergens and fine dust, but not so restrictive that airflow is significantly impeded. If you want to use a higher-MERV filter, consult with your HVAC technician to confirm it is compatible with your system's blower capacity.
