When shopping for HVAC equipment or evaluating an upgrade, you will encounter a series of acronyms β SEER, SEER2, AFUE, HSPF, HSPF2 β that are meant to communicate efficiency. Understanding what these ratings actually represent helps homeowners make informed comparisons and realistic decisions about equipment upgrades.

SEER and SEER2 (Cooling Efficiency)

An 80 AFUE furnace converts 80 percent of the fuel it burns into heat, with 20 percent lost through the flue. A 96 AFUE furnace converts 96 percent, losing only 4 percent. Higher AFUE furnaces are more expensive upfront but consume less fuel for the same heating output.
Standard efficiency furnaces (80 AFUE) vent through conventional flue pipes. High-efficiency furnaces (90 AFUE and above) produce cooler exhaust gases that allow for PVC pipe venting, which is often routed through an exterior wall rather than the existing chimney or flue.
HSPF and HSPF2 (Heating Efficiency for Heat Pumps)
HSPF stands for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. It measures the efficiency of a heat pump in heating mode over a typical heating season. Like SEER, a higher HSPF means greater efficiency. HSPF2 is an updated version of this metric using revised testing conditions. When comparing equipment, ensure you are comparing the same metric (SEER to SEER, or SEER2 to SEER2) rather than mixing the old and new standards.
Does a Higher Rating Always Mean Lower Bills?
Higher efficiency ratings generally correspond to lower operating costs, but the actual savings depend on your local utility rates, how much you use the system, and how well the equipment is installed and maintained. An improperly sized or installed high-efficiency system will not deliver its rated efficiency in real-world conditions.
